Music Studio
Under the direction of Dr. Jessica Lee Timman, The Timman Music Studio is located at her home in McFarland, WI. Voice and piano lessons are currently offered with the intention of expanding the studio out of the home and offering more lessons in other areas.
Students in the studio have the opportunity to perform at two recitals offered every year. Dr. Timman’s students have been accepted into numerous honors choirs, have earned music scholarships to a variety of music programs, and perform lead roles in shows throughout the Madison area.
NOW ACCEPTING NEW STUDENTS!
Fall Semester: September 6th- December 21st, 2011
TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
I believe that the study of music enriches and enhances the quality of life. There is no doubt that music is constantly present in our communities, culture, and living environment on a daily basis. I believe that knowledge is best obtained through a positive, encouraging, and supportive learning environment for students in music.
I believe that the study of music is essential to a well-rounded education. The study of music enhances learning on many different levels of reading, writing, and math. The study of music fosters growth in areas of analysis, creativity, logic, and many other skills. Therefore, music should be highly valued and respected in our communities and schools.
Lessons at the Timman Music studio are tailored to address each individual student’s needs, learning styles, and interests. With an emphasis on quality education, students are encouraged to become well-rounded musicians and supporters of the fine arts.
VOICE LESSONS
I accept ages 14 and older for voice students beginning through advanced levels of singing. Serious students or professionals interested in musical study are encouraged to apply, Those students looking to major in music or are involved in performance are preferred, although amateur and beginning students are more than welcome to join the studio. In your voice lessons we will study technique, ear training, solfege, performance techniques, and standard vocal repertoire.
I believe that singers need to be well-rounded musicians. While many people learn music by ear, learning to read music is an essential aspect of being a singer. Learning to read music, and not just learn by ear, allows students to become more independent in their learning and improvement. That is why all of my voice students learn to sight read using solfege. In terms of technique, I believe the two most important concepts to work through are breath and singing with an open throat. Without a strong sense of breath support and efficiency of breath control, students will not be able use their instrument without tension, freedom, or proper tone quality. The release of tension with the young singer will produce a free, clear, and resonant tone and open other areas of technique that will need to be addressed.
PIANO LESSONS
I offer beginning and intermediate level piano lessons to ages 6 and up. Beginning adult students are also encouraged to apply. I teach out of the Faber and Faber method of piano books, which work various aspects of technique, sight reading, performance, and theory. I believe that piano is a wonderful first instrument to learn. The piano provides a wonderful foundation for musical study and often gives students an advantage if they want to study another instrument.
